The Robust Greenhouse built at Experiment Farm in Hokkaido University

Hokkaido University, in accordance with its top priority mission "the Food Valley concept* ", has established an organization "Hokkaido University Research and Education Center for Robust Agriculture, Forestry and Fisher Industries (Hereinafter called the Robust Center)" in 2018, in order to make the food value chain robust by incorporating the concept of production engineering into the agriculture, forestry, and fisheries industry. In Jun of the same year, as a management and operation base, the Robust Center established a "Robust Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Engineering Research Development Platform" which is a field for knowledge integration and innovation research development. Currently, there are 48 organizations including private companies, research institutes, related organizations and universities, as well as eight individual members on the platform.
*the Food Valley concept: the concept that Hokkaido University play a central role in creating a "Food Valley" where a research and industry for food, agriculture, forestry, and fisheries are gathered.

Robust means "internal resilience" to prevent changes caused by external disturbances such as environmental and climatic changes. Specially, the Robust Center aims to achieve sustainable food production while adapting to environmental changes such as climate change through collaboration with the agriculture, forestry, and fisheries industry and engineering and other technologies.
In order to develop next next-generation agriculture, forestry, and fisheries engineering technologies based on demand of work site, the center matches seeds with business needs, induces innovation for the next generation and performs an incubation function to facilitate collaborative research and development.
Examples of research and development include a smart viticulture system using electric robots which is taking advantage of Hokkaido's fields that are compatible with smart agriculture and a smart soil diagnosis system using paper devices. Other projects, such as the development of a freshness visualization management system for seafood that will contribute to the expansion of exports of agricultural, forestry, and marine products and foodstuffs is conducted.

In addition, we have installed two greenhouses on a farm in Hokkaido University, where we conduct demonstration experiments to overcome the lack of light and temperature resources which is a particular issue to cold regions such as Hokkaido, using biogas generated in a methane fermenter in an adjacent cattle barn and light wavelength conversion technology to promote plant growth etc. Moreover, we offer research open calls and support to our members to promote budding research and develop them into consortium-forming research.

Through these activities, we believe that we will be able to survive in the resource and environment constrained society of the 21st century.
Finally, we hope to have many people from industry, government, and academia, including workers in the field join in the platform.

3. The Netherlands: Innovation and International Cooperation

----------------------------------------------------

Agricultural Section, Netherlands Embassy in Tokyo

The Netherlands is a small country, but it is the world's second largest exporter of agricultural products and enjoys a high reputation worldwide for its efficient agricultural production and technology. In particular, the country is known for its state-of-the-art knowledge and know-how in the production of horticultural crops such as vegetables and flowers in high-tech greenhouses with advanced environmental controls. Wageningen University & Research in the Netherlands, the world's number one ranked university in the field of agricultural sciences, plays a major role in open innovation in the agricultural sector by actively conducting joint research and development with domestic and international industry, government, and academic partners.

One of the activities that Wageningen University & Research is currently focusing on in its relationship with Japan is its efforts to launch a joint Dutch-Japanese research project on greenhouse robotics and data-driven automation. As the world's population grows and demand for safe and nutritious food increases, the global food system is under pressure to produce more, while at the same time taking climate and environmental considerations into account. Growing labour shortages are also a major challenge. Innovations in robotics and automation are expected to help solve these challenges and contribute to building a sustainable food production system on a global scale.

image13391664.pngThe exploration of bilateral cooperation in this field began in 2020 through several online meetings, but activities have been in full swing since January 2022, when the "JaNeth Onshitsu Robotto" Seed Money Project was launched as a grant project in the Netherlands. After holding several online meetings for interested parties in both Japan and the Netherlands, an "innovation mission" consisting of 11 Dutch industry-government-academic partners visited Japan from 11 to 15 July 2022. The mission held discussions on future research cooperation with various organizations in Japan, including the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF), the National Agricultural Research Organization (NARO), Japanese companies and producers.

Based on the results of the mission, Wageningen University & Research will continue to exchange views with potential Japanese partners and will further discuss several use cases (potential research topics) and coordinate between the parties to launch one or more joint research projects next year.

WUR also actively collaborates with partners outside Japan. For more information on WUR's research activities and contact details, please visit the following link:  https://www.wur.nl/en/research-results.htm

In the Netherlands, horticultural crops such as vegetables and flowers are produced in high-tech greenhouses with advanced environmental controls. In order to achieve more sustainable production, various joint research projects are carried out in close collaboration between industry, government and academic partners.
